The photobook “Doors” is an eclectic record of Yusuke Yamatani’s 2019 tour through six European countries. In live solo shows that combine music, dance, installation and photography, Yamatani played drums in front of audiences, with sensors picking up vibrations from each hit, triggering strobe lights and capturing Yamatani in trance-like fury. The images (including captures of the audience and the venue) are then processed and printed during the performance.
Using a selection of the 3563 images produced in this manner and adding photographs from Yamatani’s travels from country to country – snapshots from the road, receipts, meals, people he met and places he enjoyed – the book “Doors” forms a document of Yamatani’s shows and his personal experiences, and presents itself as an edited reply to the unedited photographic expressions that originated from his performances.
