Heliotrope by . First edition. First impression. New condition.
Heliotrope by is a collection of images in which Sassen investigates new ways of image making. She does this by altering shots from recent travels in Ethiopia, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal as well as South Africa. Sassen says, “I aim to subvert the way I look at the images, and at the world. Colour, graphic shapes and shadows are my tools to revisit, reinterpret and gather a different understanding of what seems familiar. The ordinary and the magical merge. The series is derived from the impulse to explore unknown territories, physical or metaphorical".
Viviane Sassen is a dutch photographer who is present in both the fashion and fine art world. She has had multiple solo exhibitions, group projects and publications. Sassen lived in Kenya as a child but now lives in Amsterdam. She is known for her use of geometric shapes, often abstractions of bodies. Also, Sassen remains conscious of challenging the over-stereotypical images of famine and poverty in Africa by ensuring the prevalence of contemporary elements in her photographs. She says, "You should always be able to judge a photograph on different grounds, on political, social, emotional, but also on personal grounds".
