"The series takes as its subject a variety of windows, in various states of decay, photographed on the streets of post-war Berlin. As individual works the images are small in scale, however they can be installed as a group to reflect the way in which Bergemann first exhibited them in Berlin in 1970. Bergemann described her interest as lying in capturing ‘the edge of the world, not the centre’ (quoted in von Wild et al. 2017). From the late 1960s onwards she began photographing the streets of post-war East Berlin, a city which more than two decades after the end of the Second World War still bore visible signs of the conflict. Bergemann documented everyday life as she saw it, focusing on the people and architecture of the city, highlighting the contrast between images ‘fabricated’ by the East German government and the reality of daily life." - Shoair Mavlian, Tate Britain
